Bringing Pets on Hawaiian Airlines: What You Need to Know

Traveling with your pet on Hawaiian Airlines involves understanding specific policies to ensure a safe and comfortable journey for both you and your animal companion. Here's what you need to know:

In-Cabin Pet Travel

Hawaiian Airlines allows small dogs and cats to travel in the passenger cabin on inter-island flights and flights between Hawaii and North America. To qualify, the combined weight of your pet and its carrier must not exceed 25 pounds (11 kg). Each passenger is permitted to bring one pet carrier.

Carrier Requirements

The pet carrier must be soft-sided, leak-proof, and well-ventilated, with maximum dimensions of 16 inches long, 10 inches wide, and 9.5 inches high. It should be spacious enough for your pet to stand, sit, and turn around comfortably. During the flight, the carrier must be stowed under the seat in front of you, and your pet must remain inside at all times.

Booking and Fees

To arrange in-cabin pet travel, contact Hawaiian Airlines Reservations at 1-800-367-5320. The fee is $35 for inter-island flights and $125 for flights between Hawaii and North America. Pets are not accepted on international flights or flights to/from certain destinations, including New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), and Austin (AUS).

Health and Documentation Requirements

A health certificate issued by a veterinarian within 14 days prior to departure is required for pets traveling between Hawaii and North America. This certificate must confirm that your pet is healthy and fit for air travel. Pets must also be at least 8 weeks old to be eligible for travel.

Seat Restrictions

Passengers with in-cabin pets cannot occupy seats in First Class on flights between North America and Hawaii, bulkhead seats, exit rows, or any seat without adequate under-seat stowage for the pet carrier.

Arrival Procedures into Hawaii

Upon arrival in Hawaii, inform the Hawaiian Airlines arrival agent as you deplane. The agent is required by law to escort you and your pet to animal inspection. Leaving the arrival gate without an airline escort or departing the airport before the animal has been screened is a violation of State of Hawaii regulations.

Pets as Checked Baggage

For larger pets or those that do not meet in-cabin requirements, Hawaiian Airlines allows transportation of dogs, cats, and household birds as checked baggage on inter-island flights and flights between Hawaii and the U.S. mainland. The combined weight of the pet and carrier must not exceed 70 pounds (32 kg). The fee is $60 for inter-island flights and $225 for other flights. Each carrier can contain only one animal, except for two puppies or kittens from the same litter or breed. During periods of extreme temperatures, the airline may restrict pet transportation in cargo. Additionally, from April 15 through October 15, pets are not accepted as checked baggage from San Jose, Sacramento, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Service Animals

Trained service animals are welcome aboard Hawaiian Airlines flights. These are dogs that have been trained to perform specific tasks to assist their owner with a disability. Emotional support and comfort animals do not qualify as service animals under the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Air Carrier Access Act and are not accepted by Hawaiian Airlines. However, they may be transported as pets, provided all pet acceptance requirements are met.

Additional Considerations

Hawaiian Airlines does not accept pets in the cabin on flights to/from international locations, PPG, JFK, BOS, AUS, and SLC. For flights arriving in Honolulu (HNL) before the Animal Quarantine Facility opens at 8:30 AM, the State of Hawaii requires that passengers and their pets remain in the terminal with a Hawaiian Airlines agent until the facility opens.

For pets that do not meet the requirements for in-cabin or checked baggage travel, or for unaccompanied pets, Hawaiian Airlines Cargo offers transportation services. For more information, contact Hawaiian Airlines Cargo at 1-877-HA-CARGO (422-2746).

By adhering to these guidelines, you can ensure a safe and comfortable journey for both you and your furry friend on Hawaiian Airlines.
